TMA: Alliance for Transportation

Poor signage. Lousy surface conditions on side streets. Spotty bus service. Speed traps on arterials. And, boy oh boy, how awful could it get if the Alaskan Way Viaduct falls down?

With transportation issues like these, the Duwamish business community needs all the help it can get. That’s why a few years ago a group of local businesses partnered up to form the Duwamish Transportation Management Association (TMA).

The TMA is a non-profit group dedicated to improving transportation services in, to and through the Duwamish business community extending from the professional sports stadiums in the north to King County International Airport in the south.

Business owners and managers can gain access to financial incentives to help encourage employees to carpool and vanpool through a partnership between the TMA and Metro. Those programs are supported by grants from the South Downtown Foundation and the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The TMA also teams up with the City of Seattle and the Manufacturing Industrial Council to cosponsor the Seattle Freight Mobility Advisory Committee, the first such advisory group in city history. The freight committee is co-chaired by Peter Whitehead of Nelson Trucking and John Odland of MacMillan-Piper.

Members of the TMA also participate in events where they get to know key government decision-makers on transportation. The TMA board meets the second Thursday morning of each month, 8-9:30 a.m.

Easyriders. The TMA and Metro can help employers set up carpools and vanpools. They can also help individual employees hook up with existing carpools or vanpools operated by nearby businesses. Thanks to help from Metro, Alaskan Copper and Brass was honored in 2004 for getting 40 percent of its work force to try alternatives to drive-alone.
